Areas of Use and Application;

Designed for flammable gas, vapor and dust environments where sparks or surface temperature may cause an explosion:

Oil & Gas: Refineries, FPSO units, offshore platforms, and loading terminals.

Chemistry and Petrochemicals: Process control areas, solvent storage areas, and reactor surroundings.

Marine: Ship engine rooms, LNG/LPG tankers, and chemical cargo areas.

Hydrogen & Renewable Energy: Hydrogen production plants, electrolyzer sites, and battery storage centers (BESS).

Pharmaceutical and Paint Industry: Production lines containing volatile chemicals and explosive dusts.

What is an Ex-Proof Siren and Why is it Mandatory?

Ex-proof (Explosion-proof) refers to a protective structure that prevents arcs, sparks, or high temperatures originating from electrical components inside the device from igniting flammable gas or dust clouds in the environment.

In environments where standard warning devices can become ignition sources by producing electric arcs, they completely eliminate the risk of explosion thanks to their pressure-resistant armored bodies and special flameproof channels.

Hazardous Area Zone Classification and Selection Criteria;

Zone Class, Definition and Risk Level, Required Protection Type;

Zone 0 / 20 Continuous or prolonged risk of explosive atmosphere. Device installation is generally not recommended or is extremely limited.

Zone 1 / 21 Periodic risk of explosive atmosphere under normal operating conditions (e.g. filling stations, pump rooms). Ex d (Flameproof) or Ex e (Enhanced Safety) is mandatory.

Zone 2 / 22 Areas where there is no risk of explosion under normal operating conditions, or if one occurs, it is short-lived (e.g. pipelines, open storage). Ex nR, Ex ec or higher standards (all Zone 1 certified devices can be used).

Four Critical Factors in Choosing the Right Siren:

Protection Type (Ex d vs. Ex e): For Zone 1 areas, Ex d (Flameproof) housings that cool the internal explosion without leaking out should be preferred.

Acoustic Power (dB): The siren sound should be at least 10-15 dB louder than the ambient background noise (105–125 dB levels are suitable for heavy industry).

Temperature Class (T Class): The correct label should be selected from T1 to T6 according to the gas's spontaneous ignition temperature (Common standards: T4 / T6).

Cable Entries and Glands: For protection integrity, ATEX certified explosion-proof cable glands must be used at the housing entries.

How to Read ATEX Codes?

II: For use in non-mining surface industrial facilities (Group II).

2G: Category 2 (Suitable for Zone 1, G = Gas environment).

Ex db: Flameproof Enclosure type.

IIC: Covers the most dangerous gas group (Hydrogen, Acetylene, etc.);

Also valid in IIA and IIB environments.

T6: Guarantees that the maximum surface temperature of the device will not exceed 85°C.

Gb: Equipment Protection Level (EPL - High protection level).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ);

What is an Ex-proof siren and how does it differ from standard sirens?

An Ex-proof siren is a certified device that prevents an electrical arc or spark operating in explosive environments from igniting the gas/dust cloud outside.

Unlike standard sirens, they feature a flameproof (Ex d) or enhanced safety (Ex e) pressure-resistant housing architecture and international ATEX/IECEx approvals.

Which models should be preferred in Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas? In Zone 1 areas with periodic risks, flameproof "Ex d" or "Ex e" protection types are mandatory.

In Zone 2 areas, in addition to Zone 1 approved devices, "Ex nR" or "Ex ec" class equipment can be preferred. A device manufactured for Zone 2 cannot be installed in Zone 1 areas under any circumstances.

When choosing an explosion-proof siren, how is the sound level (dB) determined?

For the alarm sound to be clearly audible, it must be at least 10 to 15 dB louder than the background noise in the area. In facilities with high machine noise, multi-tone sirens adjustable between 110 dB and 125 dB are used.

Can standard cable glands be used in the installation of an explosion-proof siren?

No. To maintain the integrity of the housing, it is a legal and technical requirement that cable entries also be sealed with ATEX-certified explosion-proof glands suitable for the relevant Zone and gas group.
